Grand Canyon to stop overnight stays due to water line breaks

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ (AZFamily) — Grand Canyon National Park visitors hoping to stay overnight at the South Rim will have to change plans because of this week’s new water restrictions.

The park said the 12.5-mile-long Transcanyon Waterline has experienced a series of significant breaks so new regulations will be put in place.

Starting on Saturday, there will be no overnight guest lodging at hotels operated by Xanterra, such as El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, and Maswik Lodge, as well as Delaware North’s Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village.

Overnight hotel accommodations outside the park in the town of Tusayan will not be impacted by changes in park operations.

Only dry camping will be allowed but faucets in the bathrooms will still have water. The spigot at Mather Campground on the South Rim will be turned off, so water will only be available at the Mather Campground check-in kiosk.

No fires will be allowed on the South Rim and inner canyon areas, officials said, and that includes any type of charcoal fires and wood-burning fire.

“These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of water resources. The goal is to restore full operational status for overnight guests on the South Rim as quickly as possible,” park officials said in a statement.

The Grand Canyon National Park will still be open for guests during the day and all South Rim food and drink services, the Grand Canyon Clinic and the Post Office will remain open.
