Chris Klieman is set to retire as the K-State football coach as early today, and his replacement is already lined up: Collin Klein.
The Manhattan Mercury has learned that the coaching transition is set to be announced this week. No press conference had been announced as of early Wednesday, but the transition is expected to take effect this week.
Klieman, 58, just completed his seventh season at K-State, compiling a 54-37 record, winning the Big 12 Championship in 2022. The Wildcats will play in an as-yet-undetermined bowl game this year, having gone 6-6 in the regular season.
Before arriving in Manhattan, Klieman won four national titles at North Dakota State in five seasons.
Klein, 36, is currently the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, where he has been the past two seasons. Prior to that he was the offensive coordinator under Klieman. He’s a K-State icon, having led the Wildcats to a Big 12 title as quarterback in 201. He was a Heisman Trophy runner-up that year. His name is in the Ring of Honor at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
An early signing day press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. today.
