Tom Pelphrey Shares How Mark Ruffalo Brought Humor to Their HBO Series “Task”

During a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Tom Pelphrey shared his experiences working alongside co-star Mark Ruffalo on the HBO series “Task,” a Delaware County crime drama that has already been renewed for a second season. Pelphrey, who hails from Monmouth County, New Jersey, plays a trash collector named Robbie. His character becomes entangled with a local motorcycle gang and the FBI as they investigate a series of robberies in the Philadelphia suburbs. Ruffalo portrays the head of the FBI task force in pursuit of the criminals.
Pelphrey described Ruffalo as a “silly” yet “kindest, sweetest” person, highlighting some lighthearted moments from their filming in the Pennsylvania woods. He recounted a humorous incident where Ruffalo would wander off, foraging for berries and warning Pelphrey about which ones were safe to eat. “Here, Tom, you can eat these berries, you can eat these berries, don’t eat those berries,” Pelphrey recalled Ruffalo saying.
Fallon was curious about the source of Ruffalo’s cheerful demeanor. Pelphrey revealed that he once asked Ruffalo if he had always been this way while filming. To Pelphrey’s surprise, Ruffalo admitted that he used to be more intense. This prompted Pelphrey to joke about his own serious nature, to which Ruffalo quipped, “Kind of?”
“Task” represents a continuation of creator Brad Inglesby’s exploration of crime dramas set in Delaware County, following the success of his earlier series “Mare of Easttown.” The show immerses viewers in the local culture, featuring Delco accents and references. Scenes were filmed at recognizable locations such as Wissahickon Valley Park, a Delaware County courthouse, and the Italian Market.

In addition to discussing his role in “Task,” Pelphrey expressed his lifelong passion for football, which was instilled in him during childhood in Howell Township, New Jersey. He fondly reminisced about attending New York Giants games with his grandfather, who held season tickets as the former president of the local electrical union. The tailgating traditions, complete with Jersey Mike’s sandwiches, remain a cherished memory for Pelphrey. “It just carried right into adulthood,” he shared, adding that he typically doesn’t attend a game without face paint.
