Venue left vacant for five years finally welcomes new eatery

The City of Bayswater has welcomed a new cafe to the Rise in Maylands, filling a prime space that had been vacant for almost five years.
Grind @ The Rise has taken on the lease, offering people a new spot to catch up for coffee while helping activate the surrounding area.
The city said the cafe served healthy options including smoothie bowls, wraps, baked goods, and juices made with locally sourced ingredients.
Councillors selected the Rockingham-based operator at a meeting in July. Two other applicants — Maylands’ Grow & Grind and Bayswater’s JBD Pty Ltd, were also considered for the contract but were unsuccessful.
The new cafe is expected to provide employment opportunities for residents, with plans to offer barista training to young people.

City of Bayswater mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the cafe joined several not-for-profit groups already leasing space at the Rise.
“In occupying this space with a cafe, the city is meeting a growing demand to activate this important, well used and community-facing part of Maylands,” she said.
“Attracting a tenant like Grind @ The Rise is really exciting, as the business is connected to Ambrosia Catering — a well-renowned catering company that caters for events across the State, showing our city can be an appealing option for high-calibre businesses.”

“Whether you’ve participated in a group fitness class at the health club, studied at the Maylands Library, dropped your kid off at the creche, or even hired a court for a round of pickleball, there’s now the option to have a coffee afterwards or just take a break,” she said.
“I’m pleased to see Grind @ The Rise now open for business, giving more to the locals who go to the Rise, and ultimately making our city an even greater place to live in.”
The cafe is wheelchair-accessible, pram-friendly, and caters for all dietary requirements, making it suitable for casual meet-ups.
The opening comes as some residents raise concerns about antisocial behaviour in the area. Deputy mayor Elli Petersen-Pik said on social media the city was considering further measures to address the issue, including the possibility of locking public toilets for a period.
