‘Embarrassing’: Pfeiffer on ‘awkward’ scene

After decades on screen, Michelle Pfeiffer is no stranger to an occasional dance scene – but her performance in her latest film took her right out of her comfort zone.

Prime Video’s Oh. What. Fun stars Pfeiffer as Claire, the overworked mother and the glue who’s been holding her chaotic family together during the festive season, thanks to her meticulous planning.

But when she’s accidentally left behind after organising a special outing for them all, she takes off on an impromptu, cross-country adventure – ultimately ending up dancing on stage in a televised “holiday mum contest”.

“I was not freestyling … that was all choreographed,” Pfeiffer, 67, told news.com.au of her rather iconic dance moves (think running man and finger-pointing).

“It was beautifully awkward … [but] I had to pump myself up a bit because it was so embarrassing,” she admitted.

While the audience gets to watch it on screen, according to Leary, the live show was even better.

“It was so funny to watch live. It was fantastic. I know it’s funny in the movie as well, but it was really fun to watch,” Denis Leary, 68, laughed.

Oh. What. Fun., directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Idea Of You), features a star-studded line-up, including Leary as Claire’s husband Nick, and Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz and Dominic Sessa as their three adult children: Channing, Taylor and Sammy.

Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Maude Apatow, Havana Rose Liu and Danielle Brooks round out the cast.

Outside of what Leary described as “chaotic but fun” days filming ensemble scenes together, the actors also got together for pickleball competitions on the weekend, with Pfeiffer credited as the most “competitive” – and skilled – of the group.

Perhaps unsurprising given its theme, the cast and crew exchanged sweet gifts when it wrapped up.

“I was given a great specialty coffee pot from Michelle, and some coffee. We both drink low acidic coffee, so it had special filters,” Leary said.

Moretz added that they were each also given a pair of special socks, “with blessings on them, really cute” as well as personalised Christmas decorations.

Meanwhile, the entire cast hit the red carpet for the world premiere in New York City on Tuesday night – and were joined by Gwen Stefani, who provided an original new song – Shake The Snow Globe – specifically for the film.

Oh. What. Fun is now available to stream on Prime Video.
