The advisory came into effect at 9am today and will be in place until 9am Saturday.

Meanwhile the wet and windy morning will see rain extending to the northeast today, and it might turn heavy in some places.

Winds will increase in the meantime to strong and gusty, with gales expected on the south and east coasts.

The rain will give way to scattered showers and brighter spells, which can extend from the southwest in the afternoon and evening.

The highest temperatures will range between 8 and 12C across the country, but Ulster will see 6 to 9C.

Meanwhile, winds will decrease, while some showers will become heavy.

Met Éireann forecaster Liz Walsh said: “Easterly winds will be strong and gusty everywhere for a time today and will be accompanied by rain, which will turn heavy at times”.

Tonight will be cloudy, bringing showers as well as some clearer and drier weather, too.

Temperatures will drop to between 5 and 10C, with strong winds in the southwest and along the south coast.

“The outlook for the weekend is a bit of a showery looking Saturday, breezy in the south, with a spell of rain moving northeasterly over the country on Saturday night,” Ms Walsh said.

“[It will be] followed by a somewhat drier and brighter and calmer Sunday, but with the chance of some heavy showers near the Atlantic coast later,” she added.

Met Éireann has forecast “unsettled” and “changeable” weather in store, with low pressure bringing wet and windy weather in the coming days.

The national broadcaster has warned of potential for very windy weather on Monday night and Tuesday for a time.

However, it will be relatively mild, with little or no frost, accompanied by drier, sunnier, and calmer interludes.
