Egypt warns of sharp temperature drop, fog, and rain

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has issued a warning regarding weather conditions across Cairo and the governorates, stating that the country will experience sharp and rapid fluctuations, with temperatures significantly dropping across all regions.

The weather will be cold in the morning across the north of the country down to northern Upper Egypt, becoming moderate during the day, and cold at night across most areas.

Fog, wind, and visibility

The EMA announced that active winds will increase the sensation of coldness. It noted that water mist/fog is expected (from 4:00 AM to 9:00 AM) on roads leading to Cairo, Lower Egypt, northern Upper Egypt, Central Sinai, and Canal cities, and may occasionally reach the level of dense fog (or “smog”) on some roads.

The EMA also indicated there will be active winds raising sand and dust over parts of the Northwestern Coasts, Western Desert, and Southern Egypt, which may lead to disrupted maritime navigation in both the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

Rain and snow forecast

Weather maps indicate chances of moderate to occasionally heavy rain on Saturday over North Sinai, the Gulf of Aqaba, the Gulf of Suez, Ras Ghareb, and Zaafarana, with snow reaching the peaks of Saint Catherine City.

Light to moderate rain is expected over parts of central and southern Upper Egypt intermittently. Potential light rain is also expected on the Matrouh coasts, Northwestern Coasts, southern Delta, and Canal cities, with a 20% chance of extending to Greater Cairo.

Weather maps warn that active winds coinciding with thunderstorms will lead to poor visibility on some roads.

Safety recommendations

The EMA advised citizens to exercise caution while driving during periods of fog and mist, avoid mountainous roads during heavy rainfall, secure objects prone to being blown away by the wind, and follow updates from the Meteorological Authority.
