FAU to Create Commuter Lounge as Part of Student Union Expansion

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is undertaking a significant renovation on its Boca Raton campus, repurposing an empty room into a dedicated “commuter lounge.” This initiative is part of a broader expansion of the Student Union, aimed at enhancing student facilities and experiences. According to Student Union Director Chris Lynch, the new lounge will provide a comfortable space where students can unwind and recharge between their classes.
Construction for the lounge is currently in progress, although official details regarding its opening date remain undisclosed. The renovation is focused on the Diamond Palm Room, strategically located next to the esports arena that debuted in 2020 after a year of planning and development.
Lynch revealed that while the Diamond Palm Room was initially designed in 2020, it was temporarily utilized for various events as the university explored long-term options for its use. The transformation into a commuter lounge is part of a larger vision for the Student Union, documented in the 2024 Student Union Expansion plan. This expansion plans a new one-story multipurpose event center, an outdoor courtyard that connects with the library, and updated exterior facades for existing buildings.
In addition to the new lounge, minor renovations are also set to occur in three first-floor spaces, including the Diamond Palm Room. However, FAU has yet to announce a definitive completion date for the entire expansion project.
