UPDATE: Roof collapses as crews continue to battle fire at House of Ludington in Escanaba

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – UPDATE: No injuries have been reported after a devastating fire at the House of Ludington Friday, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

Escanaba Public Safety Director Darren Smith says crews first responded to the historic site late Friday morning. There were reports of the smell of smoke on the main floor in the bar area. Smith says when officers went inside, they ran into heavy smoke near the elevator shaft on the third floor.

“We got everybody out of the building, including our officers,” said Smith. “Re-grouped. Called everybody in.”

Ford River Township Volunteer Fire Department and Michigan State Police were on scene as well.

Smith says the roof collapsed early and the building is not safe to enter.

The MSP Aviation unit had to use a drone with thermal imaging to see into building.

“We have no access,” said Smith. “Each floor probably has a foot– the main floor probably has 2.5 feet of water.”

Smith says it could take the entire weekend to get inside safely, and until then, fire trucks will keep running.

“[The Public Works Department is] gassing up the fire trucks,” said Smith. “We’re going through whole tanks of gas. The alleys are flooding. We had reports that neighboring businesses, residents, their basements are flooding.”

The city of Escanaba has asked Escanaba residents, who see discolored or dirty water, to run water until it clears. Power fluctuations could also occur.

Smith says he’s proud of the work of first responders.

“A lot of these, by the time we get there, it’s a defensive battle,” said Smith. “We do what we can. [I] think they do an awesome job of stopping it where they stop it.”

American Red Cross was on scene. They’re meeting with people who were living or staying in House of Ludington who may have lost everything in this fire. Red Cross is providing disaster relief assistance in the form of Client Associate Cards to help them live in the short-term, by being able to shop at places such as the Salvation Army.

Again, the cause of the fire is not known as of now, but one person, who has been living in the House of Ludington since before Thanksgiving, has noticed the lights flickering in their room, and this person says the flickering had progressively gotten worse, up until Friday morning. This person said their room was nearly pitch black.

A relief fund has been started at First Bank for the people who were living at House of Ludington and for its employees.

In a press release, Escanaba Public Safety says officers were removing material from the ceiling, and the fire flashed over. That threw two Public Safety officers down a flight of stairs. They were not injured and safely got out of the building.

Emergency crews are still on scene battling a fire at House of Ludington in Escanaba.

A TV6 reporter is en-route from the station at the moment of publication to the scene.

According to the city of Escanaba, residents in the surrounding area of the fire may experience temporary power fluctuations or outages.

The city says some households may notice discolored or ‘dirty’ water as systems stabilize. The disruptions are expected to be short-term but residents are encouraged to run water until it clears.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency responders and utility crews the space to work.
