Universal Could Drastically Alter Original ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993)

For over 30 years, Jurassic Park has stood as an undisputed classic. Now, Universal and Saber Interactive are gearing up to roll out a new installment that could change the way audiences experience that original story forever—but not through a sequel or remake.

While the Jurassic sequels never set out to alter the original 1993 film, each has inadvertently interfered with the lore in some way. The Lost World introduced a second island in Site B, Jurassic World imagined the park being opened to the public, Fallen Kingdom retconned John Hammond’s story by introducing his InGen partner Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) and a human clone (Isabella Sermon’s Maisie Lockwood), and most recently, Jurassic World Rebirth introduced a third island with mutant dinosaurs.

But an upcoming sequel (which at the same time acts as a prequel) will be more of an expansion of the original film. However, it may also offer fans the chance to experiment with events that unfolded in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster in a “what if”-type scenario.

“Jurassic Park: Survival” will use interactive gameplay to offer fans a story the film series itself can’t provide; one set directly after the events of the film. The first-person action-adventure video game places players in the role of Dr. Maya Joshi (performed in motion capture by Payal Mistry), who’s stranded on Isla Nublar 24 hours after the dinosaurs escaped their enclosures. The island is being re-created in full as a living environment filled with “reactive wildlife”, or a “fully realized Isla Nublar” as the official website states.

Players must navigate the island and the abandoned theme park, make split-second decisions, and respond to unpredictable dinosaur behavior, which is expected to echo that of the adaptive, AI-driven xenomorph in the hit 2014 video game “Alien: Isolation”.

But where the game could have a bigger impact on fans is in its inevitable expansions. While no DLCs are confirmed, the idea of exploring the park before the chain of events that led to the breakout is an intriguing one. Players could potentially intervene in critical moments, altering the sequence of events and perhaps averting disaster altogether.

There’s no release date for the game, but it’s rumored to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime next year or in 2027.
