Tottenham appear to have been pressured into making a change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of their clash with Slavia Prague.

Tottenham host Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with hopes of building on their latest 2-0 win over Brentford.

Their record in the competition is ropey at best this season, with just one win in the Champions League since 16 October.

However, ahead of their clash with the Czech outfit, Spurs have agreed to make a change to their stadium, much to the disappointment of one of their supporter groups.

Slavia Prague request granted as Tottenham forced to relocate LGBTQ+ flag

The Premier League ended its eight-year partnership with the LGBTQ+ campaign known as Stonewall this season, though clubs across the country have continued to show their support in the battle against homophobia in football.

Tottenham are one of them, having had an LGBTQ+ flag located in the North-East corner of the stadium, which is where the travelling supporters are situated.

However, the Athletic reported on Tuesday that Slavia Prague requested to have the flag moved on the basis of security concerns.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Keith Hackett, a former FIFA official, explained how Spurs were likely in dialogue with UEFA before agreeing to the change.

Tottenham will have given this matter due consideration and are likely to have discussed it with UEFA,” Hackett said.

“Rather than create a distraction and potential point of conflict, they have met the request of the away team.”

Proud Lilywhites share statement after Tottenham stance

Proud Lilywhites, the LGBTQ+ supporters group, have expressed their dismay at the decision to remove the flag, in a statement shared via X.

It reads: “We want to update everyone on the situation with the Progress flag for tonight’s game.

“Slavia Prague have raised concerns that some of their supporters may damage the flag and cause disorder if it remains in its usual location.

“Once an away club raises a potential safety issue, UEFA and the home club is required to assess the risk and act accordingly. The outcome for tonight is that the flag will be relocated.

“Let’s be honest about what this means. The risk here isn’t the flag. It’s the reaction of a small number of opposition supporters. That’s disappointing, and it’s another reminder of the hostility LGBTQI+ fans still face across European football.

Moments like today show exactly why visibility matters. LGBTQI+ fans shouldn’t have to shrink to make others feel comfortable.

Tonight our flag still flies and our community will continue to stand strong. Pride will always have a place at Our stadium and Our Club #COYS pic.twitter.com/15XiQ130vi

For tonight, the flag will still fly. It will still be seen. And our message remains the same. This is our home. Our community belongs here. No visiting team gets to change that. Tonight, let’s get behind the team and show the opposition that at our stadium we play with Pride.

The initial report from the Athletic states that Spurs made it clear that they wanted to keep the flag where it was, but reluctantly accepted the request.

UEFA were asked for comment, but informed that they were not able to speak on the matter as the final decision rested with Tottenham.
