Jeremy O. Harris Released From Custody In Japan After Drug Smuggling Allegations

Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris has been has been released from custody in Japan three weeks after being arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country.

The Tony-nominated playwright and actor was arrested and taken into custody on November 16 when he flew into Okinawa from Taiwan. Japanese customs officials said officers found 780 milligrams of Ecstasy in his carry-on tote bag.

According to The New York Times (citing the Tomishiro Police Station in Okinawa’s Tomigusuku City), Harris was released on Monday. Law enforcement officials declined to say whether Harris had been charged, but a representative for the playwright said no charges were filed and that Harris will remain in Japan researching an upcoming project.

Harris had faced up to seven years in prison if he was found guilty under Japan’s drug laws.
