Central Pa. university fires football coach

Don’t look now but another Pennsylvania university is searching for a head football coach after letting theirs go.

Bucknell University vice president for athletics and recreation Tim Pavlechko announced on Monday that head coach Dave Cecchini, who led the Bison since 2019, would not return in 2026.

Pavlechko said in a statement that he was “extremely grateful” for Cecchini’s dedication to the program and the mentorship he provided to players.

“Our focus now shifts to quickly identifying our next head coach to lead the program and shape a winning culture within a rapidly evolving Patriot League,” he said.

Cecchini oversaw 40 all-league selections, 19 academic all-league recipients and three league scholar-athletes of the year, during his tenure, according to the university.

The Bison finished 7th in the eight-team Patriot League this past season with a 5-7 record.

Cecchini’s record at Bucknell was 24-48 following a previous five-year head coaching stint at Valparaiso where he went 17-38, according to Footballscoop.com.

“This is an important moment of opportunity for the Bucknell football program,” Pavlechko said.

“I am deeply appreciative of the support we receive from our alumni and fans,” he continued, “and now more than ever it’s going to take all of us and more working together to provide our new head coach with the resources needed to bring Bison football to new heights.”
