Strictly Come Dancing’s Amber Davies has issued an emotional statement as she fights for her place in the semi final. Despite being scored a perfect 40 for her Charleston during Musicals Week on Saturday night, the Welsh star has faced a barrage of criticism.

The Denbigh-born plumber’s daughter, who finished starring in Great Gatsby on the West End prior to competing on Strictly, was in her element for this week’s quarter final, but comments on social media left her emotional.

Despite wowing the audience on the dancefloor each week, the 29-year-old has repeatedly come under criticism from fans for her dancing experience as she is accused of ‘essentially doing her day job’. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

Now she has hit back. In a statement in her Instagram stories she pointed out that it was “just a television show” that she wasn’t supposed to be in.

She said: “Guys, please… It really is just a television show. I wasn’t even supposed to be in the comp. You have no idea what we put our mind and body through for this experience. I’m really just trying my best with the opportunity that came to me.”

Ending it: “Anyone who has left a NICE comment. Thank you.”

The reality TV star, who won ITV2 hit dating show Love Island alongside Kem Cetinay in 2017, stepped in for Dani Dyer, who was forced to withdraw after fracturing her ankle in rehearsals.

Following her Love Island triumph nearly 10 years ago, Amber has been working in musical theatre. She most recently secured the lead role of Elle Woods in a fresh staging of Legally Blonde The Musical.

There is already a fightback against the trolls on social media. One supporter wrote: “Am I the only one not on Amber’s hate train. I think the public like to criticise the women dancers more than the men #strictly”

Another wrote: “Amber having to post this on her instagram due to some of the vile comments that she has been receiving really says it all. It’s an entertainment show at the end of the day and some of you need to take a step back and think about what you’re saying.”

A third wrote: “The hate for Amber this week is beyond forced. Her love for musical theatre opened the door to her day job and shined through in last nights dance, hence a perfect score.”
