Guy Ritchie Quietly Scores Streaming Hit As His War Thriller Returns 2 Years Later

Guy Ritchie has always been a popular filmmaker, and his projects have attracted people to the theaters or the small screen. That continues to be true on streaming, as his two-year-old war thriller The Covenant is surging back online.

2025 has been a great year for the director. Many of his older projects saw success on streaming, as well as some recent ones, including the Tom Hardy-led crime gangster show MobLand, which he directed several episodes of, or the adventure film Fountain of Youth. Now, his two-year-old thriller The Covenant has found success on streaming, per FlixPatrol.

The Covenant crawled onto the streaming charts on Netflix in the U.S. on Dec. 8, where it debuted in ninth place. Just one day later, the war thriller had already advanced further and took over sixth place.

Netflix isn’t the only platform where The Covenant is a hit. The war thriller debuted on HBO Max in several countries across Europe, and took the No. 1 spot in 11 of them. It also just made its way to No. 1 on Prime Video in Finland.

Speaking of other popular Ritchie projects, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is currently in 10th place on Starz in the U.S., and MobLand is charting all around the world as fans await Season 2, with Fountain of Youth in fifth place globally on Apple TV, and ninth in the U.S.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant‘s official description notes it follows “US Army Sergeant John Kinley and Afghan interpreter Ahmed. After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley’s life. When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first.”

The war thriller does feature a series of actual events, but the film isn’t based on a true story, as characters and plot have been created for the film. However, it does draw inspiration from the collective experience of Middle Eastern interpreters and U.S. soldiers.

Ritchie directed and co-wrote the script with frequent collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, who also produced the film with Josh Berger. They also worked together on The Gentleman, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and Wrath of Man.

The Covenant starred Jake Gyllenhaal in the leading role as Master Sgt. John Kinley, and also featured Antony Starr, Dar Salim, Alexander Ludwig, Sean Sagar, Bobby Schofield, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller.

The Covenant received stellar reviews, with an 82% approval score from the critics and a near-perfect 98% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the high score didn’t translate into ticket sales. The Covenant was produced on a high budget of $55 million, and it only grossed $20.7 million, The Numbers reports.

Throughout his filmography, Guy Ritchie directed many diverse projects, whether it was the live-action Aladdin, the new adventure film Fountain of Youth, or several action films. At the same time, he also directed two Sherlock Holmes films, released in 2009 and 2011. Now, he’s going back to Sherlock.

In 2024, the filmmaker revealed he was directing a reimagining series about the popular detective, unrelated to the two Robert Downey Jr.-led films. The show, titled Young Sherlock, will feature the detective’s first-ever murder case, and Prime Video has just revealed the first look. The series is set to debut sometime in 2026.
