Coronation Street viewers were quick to notice a major detail missing from the most recent episode of the soap. The hour-long broadcast focused entirely on the relationship between Todd and Theo. Gareth Pierce and James Cartwright have taken centre stage in recent months as part of a hard-hitting storyline tacking the problem of domestic abuse in a same sex relationship.

Although viewers may have been frustrated by the outcome, the unique standalone episode offered an emotional message about what can truly happen behind closed doors.

The entire episode was shown through the point of view of cameras such as Todd’s hidden camera, CCTV, dashcam, video doorbell and police bodycams.

A series of flashbacks showed what happened inside the flat on a terrifying night. Todd was trapped by his partner, locked in a room while he was battered.

As the abuse that Todd has been suffering intensified to dangerous levels, the powerful episode saw the police descend on the street after a report of a domestic incident.

To add to the show’s eerie feel, Coronation Street made the decision to remove the theme tune in between the ad-breaks. Viewers were quick to pick up on its absence and praised the unique feature.

Taking to social media during the episode, one viewer wrote: “I love the way #Corrie have removed the Corrie theme before the ad breaks to really add to the effect of the episode.”

A second said: “I do like the creative end of it, how it’s filmed through Todd’s hidden cameras. Also no theme tune at the ad breaks.”

Other fans picked up on the filming style, as viewers were placed in the centre of the action.

On X, one soap fan said: “Front door camera view = we never know what’s happening behind closed doors. This is clever.”

A second said: “Brilliant how tonight’s @itvcorrie was filmed for tonight’s episode” while another added: “That episode of #Corrie was absolutely fantastic. The unique way the episode was shown made it even more hard hitting and heartbreaking. If that episode helps at least one person, Corrie has done its job.”

In a huge twist, Todd and Theo were taken to the police station but in an frightening ironic turnaround, it was Theo who was treated as the victim.

He was given endless amounts of support from George and Christina, as well as the policemen. He was even offered leaflets to help with domestic abuse, when it should’ve been Todd receiving the support.

Back in the flat, Theo discovered a camera Todd had hidden in the living room. With Theo knowing his truth could be revealed, viewers were left on a cliffhanger, wondering if the truth will ever come out.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
