Hull KR snubbed for major national award despite treble-winning campaign

Hull KR have had an emphatic 2025 campaign, winning the Challenge Cup, League Leaders Shield and the Grand Final. However, despite their huge success, the club have not been included in the nominations for a national award.
Every December, the Sports Personality of the Year awards take place, and sporting icons such as Lewis Hamilton, Mo Farah and Jonny Wilkinson have all taken home the major award on the night, with GB Olympian Keeley Hodgkinson taking home the top prize in 2024.
However, there are many awards that are given out on the night, with one of those being the Sports Personality Team of the Year, awarded to the best squad of players/athletes across the year.
Following their treble winning campaign in 2024, Wigan Warriors currently hold that title, but the prestigious trophy will not be staying in rugby league for another 12 months, after the Robins were left out of the final nominations.
Willie Peters’ side were snubbed for the award, in favour of the England Women’s football team, the Lionnesses, who won retained the Women’s Euro’s in Switzerland this summer. The England Women’s rugby union side, who won their respective World Cup in September on home soil, and Team Europe, who won golf’s Ryder Cup against Team USA, were also nominated, meaning there was no place for rugby league in this year’s ceremony.

Hull KR left out of national award nominations despite treble-winning season
Rugby league and Sports Personality have only aligned on a few occasions, with no player from the 13-man code ever winning the top prize. Kevin Sinfield came second in 2015, which is the best anyone from the sport has finished, as he rounded out his illustrious career with all three trophies at Leeds Rhinos.
Australia’s Mal Meninga was the first player in the sport’s history to win anything at the awards night, as he won the ‘World Sports Star’ in 1990, after captaining the Kangaroos on a successful tour of Great Britain and France, winning 17 of their 18 games in Europe.
In 1994, Wigan won the Team of the Year award for the first time, before their second trophy of it’s kind came 30 years later. In 2006, St Helens won the Team of the Year, with head coach Daniel Anderson also winning the Coach of the Year trophy, and he still remains the only rugby league coach to win it.
In 2022, Rob Burrow was crowned the winner of the Helen Rollason award, for his work campaigning for Motor Neurone Disease.
