Truro City manager John Askey feels the magnitude of tonight’s National League game with Wealdstone is motivation enough for his side as they look to pull off a great escape in the second half of the season.
The Tinners are fast approaching the half-way stage of their maiden campaign in non-league’s top division, but the step up and gulf in class has been difficult for the National South champions to bridge as they sit rooted to the foot of the table with 12 points from their 21 games played so far.
That leaves Truro eight points adrift of safety and they have not won since a 2-1 victory over FC Halifax Town almost two months ago. Despite that poor run, performances have not always been poor with individual mistakes at key moments often the cause for their downfall. But while the situation looks grim, all is not lost – if they can start turning some heartening performances into wins and points.
“I think we all accepted that we weren’t good enough on Saturday, but they are aware that the (Wealdstone) game is a big game for us and they will be giving it everything they’ve got,” Askey said ahead of tonight’s clash at the TCS.
“Again, you can’t knock the players’ efforts. There wasn’t one player out there that you thought could quite easily have stopped working, or stopped closing down, but they didn’t. They kept going and they are really honest. We just need a little bit more on Tuesday.
“All we can do is keep working with players, pointing out where we think we can improve. It’s not a time to be shouting and balling, everyone knows the situation we are in and Wealdstone is now a good chance for us to be at home, really roll our sleeves up and see if we can get the three points we need.”
Askey took the decision to rest certain players on the Essex coast with extra importance placed both on tonight’s clash and Saturday’s daunting trip to his former club York City, who are fourth in the table.
“We went into the Southend game knowing we had Tuesday-Saturday following the game, so the ones that were on the bench, we wanted to give them a rest and give Tyler (Harvey) 30 minutes,” he added. “It was the same with Lirak (Hasani) and Connor (Riley-Lowe) managed to get 20 minutes at the end, so it worked out OK from that point of view and building up to Tuesday’s game.”
