A 27-year-old woman walking with her two young children in Chilliwack was killed when a tree limb fell on her during a windstorm Monday.
Chilliwack RCMP released new information Tuesday, confirming that the children were not physically hurt, and that they will not be releasing the woman’s name.
The woman and her children were walking on a trail near the dog park at Island 22 on Dec. 15, and police received a call about the incident at 3:12 p.m.
“The weather at the time was severe and unpredictable, marked by high winds and heavy rain,” Sgt. Alexandra Greenley said in a statement the following day.
“Two other people who were in the area at the time called 911 and rendered care to the female,” she added. “Chilliwack Fire Department and Emergency Health Services attended and provided life‑saving measures. Unfortunately, the 27‑year‑old Chilliwack woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
She said the coroners office is continuing to investigate but that “at this time, there is no indication of this being anything other than a tragic and unforeseen event.”
Greenley said the next-of-kin has now been notified, and that the children were not physcially harmed and are with their family.
“Out of respect for the privacy of the family, the Chilliwack RCMP will not be releasing the name of the deceased,” she added.
She also added a thank you to those who acted quickly to help the woman and children “during this difficult incident.”
The woman’s death took place during a fierce windstorm that blew through Chilliwack and the rest of the Fraser Valley, with winds up to 100 km/h.
A wind advisory was published by Environment Canada at about 3:45 p.m.
Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove also made a statement about the woman’s death.
“The news about the tragic accident at Island 22 Regional Park is absolutely devastating, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends,” Popove said in a statement released to media on Tuesday.
Trees and power lines came down all over the Lower Mainland Monday afternoon, with more than 40,000 customers without power at about 4:30 p.m.
Also in Chilliwack, crews responded to a call of a live power line that came down in a homeless encampment in the Chilliwack River Valley, and a tree across a rail line as well.
More wind and rain was in the forecast for Tuesday afternoon.
