Stig Inge Bjornebye has landed a role at Rangers
Rangers have brought in Stig Inge Bjørnebye as football consultant and advisor as the club attempts to emerge from the Kevin Thelwell catastrophe.
The former Norway international will work at Ibrox for an initial six-month period and Record Sport understands he is not seen as a replacement for the axed sporting director.
There has been a period of transition at Ibrox just months after the US takeover with Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart sacked in the wake of a dismal first six months of the season. Boss Russell Martin was also shown the door – with Danny Rohl left to pick up the pieces of a disastrous campaign.
The club are still searching to fill the key roles but Bjørnebye will be in place for the crucial January transfer window.
He has vast experience in the game having played for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Rosenborg. But crucially he also has previously worked as a sporting director for Rosenborg and with Aarhus in Denmark.
Record Sport understands Bjørnebye is not a replacement for Thelwell. Instad, the role will see him take work in an advisory and supportive capacity, where he will providing additional experience and perspective across football matters.
His first – and major task – will be to identify players to land in the upcoming window and will directly report to Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh.
Rohl will be involved in planning the moves in the market but final transfer decisions ultimately sit with Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises.
German Rohl has steadied the ship with an eight-game unbeaten run in the league, steering the club to third in the Premiership. Bjørnebye has now been brought in alongside the Glasgow giants’ existing football leadership.
