Calgary Fire Crews Respond to Early Morning Downtown Fire

Shortly before 5:00am fire crews responded to the 200 block of 10 AV SW for a structure fire. On arrival fire crews saw flames and smoke in the back-alley entrance to a single-story commercial restaurant. Crews deployed hose lines and knocked down the fire from the alley. After initial knock down, crews noted continuous smoke despite no visible flames. Fire crew began overhaul operations to confirm the fire was extinguished and were on scene for an extend time as they needed to cut away layers of sub-flooring to access difficult to reach areas. CPS assisted with traffic control as traffic was closed along 10 AV SW between 1 ST SW and 2 ST SW. A fire engine needed to connect to a hydrant and traffic was also closed along 1 ST SW between 10 AV SW and 11 AV SW for the large volume hose line. There were some cleaning staff on site, but no injuries reported. Smoke spread to neighbouring businesses and activated the fire alarm system however there is no further risk, and the fire is under control. The building is also next to an active construction site but there are no impacts and workers were able to start their work with minimal impacts. Mechanical fans were used to clear smoke from the buildings. Two fire trucks remain on scene with the Fire Investigator.
