Roosters found to have breached salary cap

The Sydney Roosters have been fined by the NRL for breaching the salary cap, while the Storm have also been sanctioned for breaking team selection protocols.

On Thursday, the NRL announced the Roosters had overspent the supplementary list and training wage salary cap by $38,356 in 2024 by the NRL’s salary cap auditor.

“The NRL Salary Cap Auditor has found that Sydney Roosters spent $38,356 over the 2024 Supplementary List and Training Wage Salary Cap,” the NRL said in a statement on Thursday.

“While the breach is at the lower end of the scale, it is proposed that the Club will be issued with a fine of $36,070, which reflects the balance of the Club’s Supplementary List and Training Wage overspend when applied against an underspend with respect to its Top 30 Salary Cap calculation in 2024.”

The NRL also proposed $36,070 to be applied to the Club’s future Supplementary List and Training Wage Salary Cap calculation.

But the Roosters aren’t the only team to find themselves in hot water, with the Storm also issued a breach notice for not following proper process around team selections on at least two separate occasions in 2025.

Both relate to a player on a train and trial deal.

Train and trial players earn just $1,200 per week, however, they are paid $3,000 for every first-grade match they play.

This needs to be accounted for in the salary cap, and the club must also wait until Round 11 to select them unless they have approval from the NRL to bring them in prior to that date.

More to come.
