Multiple states to swelter as burst of heat spreads east

Multiple states will swelter over the next few days with heatwave conditions forecast in the lead up to Christmas.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave warnings for parts of New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland.

New South Wales will be hardest hit, with extreme conditions forecast for the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, South Coast and Snowy Mountains and severe conditions for much of the state’s eastern and northern parts.

Sydney will reach a top of 36C today, while some inland cities may see the mercury in the low forties.

Victoria’s northern districts will feel the same blast of heat, with a severe heatwave warning for the Northern Country, North East, East Gippsland, West and South Gippsland and North Central regions.

Conditions are expected to ease across the weekend in Victoria and southern parts of New South Wales as cooler temperatures spread from the south.

The heat will migrate north into northern NSW and south-east Queensland across the weekend with Brisbane forecast to hit a top of 36C on Monday.

Maximum temperatures ranging from the high thirties to low forties will persist until mid next week.

In Western Australia, severe conditions have eased in most areas but are forecast to persist throughout today for Pilbara and Eucla.

Adelaide will get a welcome reprieve from the heat today with southwesterly winds holding the heat at a top of 30C after yesterday saw an oppressive 40C afternoon as 48,849 people packed into Adelaide Oval for Day 2 of the Ashes third Test.
