The UK faces a snow bomb lasting 15 HOURS – with Christmas set to see areas covered in the white stuff. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day have been earmarked as possible dates where the weather takes a downturn.

And flurries could linger into Boxing Day on December 26. Snow could hit the Pennines, East Anglia and south east, from 9pm on Christmas Day night.

The advanced modelling, from WX Charts, and using Met desk data, shows the south – including Greater London – could be struck. The Peak District also looks at risk alongside the West Midlands, Birmingham and Gloucestershire.

Flurries could fall from Bristol in the west to Lincolnshire in the East at around midday on Boxing Day, on December 26. The maps have been backed up by fellow and rival forecasters including Ventusky.

It means areas at risk include Sussex, Kent, Greater London, Norfolk, Suffolk, Staffordshire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Somerset and Lincolnshire complete the list. BBC Weather forecaster Chris Fawkes said: “After a couple of weeks of milder conditions it’s about to turn noticeably colder.

“Temperatures for many parts of the UK may be a degree or two below the average for this time of year, hitting the 6-9C mark. The drop will be a result of an influx of cold air from eastern Europe.

“And if there are some small changes to that, there is a slight chance that even colder air from Scandinavia might come this way, and the possibility that any showers falling in eastern areas might turn to sleet or even snow.”

Mr Fawkes said: “As well as becoming much colder generally in time for Christmas it will probably be quite cloudy with showers developing over the North Sea and affecting eastern areas.

“The best of any sunshine would be in the north and west but there will be also be a risk of some morning frost and fog.”
