UPDATE: Power being restored after windstorm knocks out power for thousands

Newfoundland Power is reporting unplanned outages affecting thousands of customers after an overnight windstorm.

“At peak impact, approximately 22,000 customers were without power,” Newfoundland Power posted on social media. “Early this morning, that number had dropped to 17,000, and now sits at about 11,400. Our teams have been working continuously since the start of the storm, and will work diligently to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Watch for updates on our social channels and follow the Newfoundland Power Outage Centre.”

Wind gusts reached a peak of almost 140 km/hr. The outages stretch from the Avalon Peninsula to central Newfoundland.
