Kochi: Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan passed away on Saturday, at the age of 69. He had been undergoing treatment at his residence in Udayamperoor for a long-term illness.

Following a sudden deterioration in his health, he was admitted to a hospital in Thrippunithura, where his death was confirmed on Saturday morning.

Who was Sreenivasan?

Born on 6 April 1956 in Patyam, near Thalassery, Kerala, Sreenivasan was the son of a school teacher and a homemaker. He completed his schooling in Kadirur and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from PRNSS College, Mattanur before pursuing formal film training at the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu, Chennai.

Sreenivasan made his acting debut in 1977 with P.A. Backer’s Manimuzhakkam and went on to become one of Malayalam cinema’s most respected actors. Over nearly five decades, he appeared in over 225 films, gaining acclaim for his sharp social satire and memorable performances. Beyond acting, he was a celebrated screenwriter and director, penning screenplays for iconic hits that are still remembered today and directing award-winning films that won both state and national honours. His work often blended humour with social commentary, making films that resonated deeply with audiences while addressing real-life issues.

He was also a producer, co-producing successful films that became cultural landmarks. His contribution as an actor, writer, and filmmaker helped shape modern Malayalam cinema and influenced generations of actors and directors.
