Luka Doncic has been named official community ambassador for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with multiple games of the leading football or soccer event to be played in Los Angeles.

“I’m proud to serve as a community ambassador of the World Cup in Los Angeles,” said the 26-year-old Slovenian combo guard.

“The World Cup is the biggest event in sports, so I’m very excited. I’ve always watched soccer since I was a kid. I watch it now. It’s a part of my life for sure,” added Doncic.

“I think LA is a very nice city,” continued the Los Angeles Lakers superstar, “We’ve got a lot of culture. Soccer is getting more and more popular in the U.S., especially in LA. So I think the culture right here, because of that, is the perfect city to host it.”

“Sports can bring the best in people, especially the World Cup. Everybody gets together to watch the World Cup, to watch the best players play for their country. So, because of that, it inspires not only kids, but everybody. I’m very excited to be the ambassador of it,” concluded Doncic.

He embodies the international spirit of the FIBA World Cup 26 and the vibrant energy of Los Angeles, FIFA described the Ljubljana native in a statement.

The Real Madrid supporter, stretching from basketball and his former team to football, will join Magic Johnson on the list of community ambassadors in Los Angeles.

Next summer’s World Cup will be hosted in 16 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, including Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Doncic will focus on his first full season with the Lakers. He is set to play in the NBA Preseason 2025 finale against the Sacramento Kings in crypto.com Arena on Friday, before switching to the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season and the opener opposite the Golden State Warriors in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
