A local man returned home with more than just dinner after he bought a Kentucky Lottery Scratch-off ticket, winning $50,000.

Arnold Suter, of Frankfort, recently headed to his local Kroger on U.S. 127 South to pick up dinner and decided to grab a $5,000,000 Fortune Scratch-off ticket on his way out.

Suter told lottery officials that he plays the lottery occasionally, usually when he has extra cash.

“I just went out to get supper and got that one,” he said.

The winning moment came just minutes later before leaving the parking lot.

“I was in the car when I scratched it off. I’ll scratch off the numbers first and then go back to scratch the prize,” he said. Suter had revealed the symbol indicating he automatically won the $50,000 prize.

He couldn’t wait to call his wife, Janette, to tell her the good news.

“I called her as soon as I hit it and went straight to the house,” Suter said. The realization of the win was overwhelming. “I just went blank,” adding that it still hasn’t fully sunk in.

“I shared the news with my wife, and she thought I was lying,” he said.

“I figured he probably got it wrong, probably scratched something wrong,” Janette said. “I was in shock.”

The couple claimed the ticket at Kentucky Lottery headquarters and walked away with a check for $36,000 after taxes.

As for plans for the prize money, Suter said the couple will pay bills and spend some money on their grandchildren.

Kroger will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.

The Kentucky Lottery’s $50 $5,000,000 Fortune Scratch-off game was released to players in October 2024. A $1 million top prize was claimed in April by a woman in South-Central Kentucky, leaving one $1 million top prize remaining. There are seven $50,000 second-tier prizes and 14 $5,000 third-tier prizes remaining.

In 2025, the Kentucky Lottery paid out more than $1.6 billion in prizes. Kentucky Lottery proceeds have funded scholarships and grants for more than 1 million Kentucky college students.
