Adam Zampa, the Aussie Superstar Who May Never Play Test Cricket for His Country

Since the days of Shane Warne, if one spinner has stood out in Australia it is none other than Adam Zampa. The man is a superstar in the white-ball formats with over 300 scalps in just over 200 games. He’s been around for nearly a decade and had a crucial role to play in Australia winning the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Adam Zampa Yet to Play a Test

But sadly, for all his exploits in limited overs cricket, Zampa has never played a Test for his country. At 33, it seems unlikely that he ever will as he’s got maybe another three to five good years max. But the leg-spinner has no regrets in the matter. Speaking in an interview on The Howie Games, Zampa said that if the choice was to represent Australia in 250 white ball games or a couple of Tests, he would choose the former.

“I would’ve loved to have played Test cricket,” he said.

“If you said to me when I was a young boy, do I want to play 250 games for my country in white ball cricket or play a couple of Test matches, I’m taking the 250,” he added.

Adam Zampa Is a White-Ball Superstar

Zampa has close to 200 ODI scalps and is not too far away from the 150-wicket mark in T20Is. One does expect him to be part of the Australian squads for the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the ODI World Cup in 2027. In a bowling attack dominated by pacers, Zampa stands out in a class of his own as a spinner.

Adam Zampa Not Playing Tests Could Be the Oldest Format’s Loss

If the man had played Test cricket, would he have been as good as if not better than Warne? We shall never know. While it is unlikely, the future is not set in stone and he may get a cap before his international career ends. But even if he does not, his legacy as an Aussie superstar is sealed thanks to his exploits in the white-ball format. Maybe, in this case, it is more Test cricket’s loss than it is Zampa’s.
