The closures are expected to be in place until the morning of Monday (27 October).
As of 6.30am there are delays of at least half-an-hour on the northbound M6 past the scene and the M61 is showing as congested much earlier than usual as drivers seek to head towards Manchester to go around the closure.
A police spokesperson said: “An investigation into how the collision occurred will commence, and whilst we understand that this may cause some discussion in the local community, we do ask that you please refrain from speculating online or otherwise. When we are able to provide you with more detail, we will bring you an update.
“We know that some of you may be stuck in the traffic caused by this road closure and that it may be frustrating to have your journey changed or delayed. We ask that you please be patient and allow our officers and colleagues to work to resume normality as soon as we can.”

M6 southbound diversion route in full
Follow route marked with a hollow square symbol on local road signs and expect the A49 junction for Wigan Road to be extremely busy as of Monday morning along with routes near Euxton
- Exit M6 southbound at J28
- Turn left on to the B5256 eastbound
- Turn right at the next junction on to the A49 southbound
- Follow the A49 southbound to the junction with the B5248 Dawson Lane
- Turn left on to the B5248 Dawson Lane and continue on to Central Avenue
- Continue south on Central Avenue to the junction with Euxton Lane
- Turn left on to Euxton Lane and head east
- At the roundabout with the B5252 take the third exit
- Follow the B5252 southbound to the roundabout with the A581
- Take the third exit from the roundabout on to the A581 westbound
- Follow the A581 westbound to the junction with the A49 and turn left
- Remain on the A49 southbound to the junction with the A5209 in Standish
- Turn right on to the A5209 westbound
- Follow the A5209 westbound towards the M6
- Turn right on to Crow Orchard Road to reach J27 of the M6
- To re-join the M6 southbound take the first exit from the roundabout
