Schools in Vanceboro area closed today as manhunt for murder suspect continues

VANCEBORO, N.C. (WITN) – A deputy stabbed last night is out of the hospital, while an intense manhunt continues for the man suspected of killing his grandmother.
At an afternoon briefing, Sheriff Chip Hughes says there are no new sightings for Dominic Connelly, but multiple resources have been deployed, including drones and helicopters.
“We’re hot on his heels. We’re keeping him running, but it’s very important to understand that this is a dangerous person,” Hughes said. “Therefore, all of our resources will go after him. This is the number one priority from my office.”
The sheriff says law enforcement and several agents, including 15 to 20 from SBI, are patrolling the area.
The 24-year-old Connelly is suspected of stabbing a Craven County deputy at a fast-food restaurant at 380 Highway 43 in Vanceboro.
Hughes said around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Connelly stabbed a deputy during a confrontation in the bathroom of the restaurant before taking off towards a nearby apartment complex.
Schools in and around Vanceboro were closed today as law enforcement continues their search for Connelly. The sheriff is recommending that schools stay closed until he is caught.
Connelly is wanted for the murder of 72-year-old Patricia Lopedote, who was found in her burned-down home this past Saturday.
Beaufort County Schools say because of the manhunt, they are coordinating with Beaufort County deputies to increase patrols in and around their schools today, which remain open.
Connelly is currently wanted for murder, first-degree arson, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
He also now faces the additional charges of attempted first-degree murder, felony assault on law enforcement, causing serious injury and resisting a public officer.
The sheriff says they have been in contact with Connelly’s family and they are cooperating.
Deputies warn that anyone assisting Connelly will face criminal charges.
