Raise a quid, grow a mo for noble cause

LEGENDARY men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer charity Movember is ready for another November of hirsute shenanigans from tomorrow, with a renewed focus on supporting men in regional and remote communities.

As well as leaving your upper lip unshaven to support the cause, did you know there are several other ways to drum up cash as well?

Fundraisers can also run or walk 60 kilometres over the 30 days in honour of the 60 men lost to suicide every hour globally, host an event, or “Mo their own way” – whether that’s climbing a mountain, shaving their head, or creating their own “Mo mission.”

Movember co-founder Travis Garone said while the movement has raised in excess of $1.7 billion and funded more than 1300 men’s health projects across the world since its inception in 2003, men’s health still isn’t enough of a priority.

And the numbers don’t lie, as statistics show that men die on average four years earlier than women, suicide remains the leading cause of death in men aged 15 to 54, one in five will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer remains the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 34.

“Our healthcare systems often don’t meet men where they are, especially in rural and remote areas – and too many fall through the cracks,” Mr Garone said.

“The moustache is our rallying cry – it gets people talking, laughing, and most importantly, acting.

“Every Mo grown and every conversation sparked can save a life.”
