TODAY: Celebrate Nevada Day family-friendly fun; state and local offices closed

Friday is Nevada Day, when the state recognizes its admission to the Union and its 161st birthday.

Nevada became the 36th state on Oct. 31, 1864. The Silver State observes Nevada Day on the last Friday of October each year, and this year marks the rare occasion when the observed holiday falls on the actual date of Oct. 31.

The holiday means all state, county and city offices are closed on Friday. There are also no classes for public schools in Clark and Washoe counties.

Mail delivery is federal and continues as normal. If you are in Carson City, the Post Office will offer a special pictorial postmark on Friday. An employee will be in the lobby offering the postmark during normal business hours.

The Vegas Golden Knights take the ice for their traditional Nevada Day matinee. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Colorado Avalanche at T-Mobile Arena.

Fans are encouraged to dress in white to match the Golden Knights’ jerseys. Halloween costumes will also be accepted, though staff can deny entry to anyone wearing offensive text or images.

Players will sign specially designed jerseys that will later go up for auction. The jerseys feature this year’s Nevada Day logo, inspired by the state’s quarter and paying homage to Las Vegas’ stained-glass art. Visit e.givesmart.com to participate in the auction.

Other Nevada Day items can be purchased at The Armory at T-Mobile Arena.

Several museums in Southern Nevada will be hosting fun events for families as well.

The Nevada State Museum at Springs Preserve is hosting state-themed activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.

In Boulder City, the Nevada State Railroad Museum is offering free train rides to kids 17 and younger all weekend long. Adult tickets are $12. Visit boulderrailroadmuseum.org for departure times.
