Mike Maddux leaving Rangers for Angels

Mike Maddux, the Texas Rangers’ pitching coach for the past three seasons, is leaving the Rangers to join the Anaheim Angels, per multiple reports.

Maddux, who spent 15 years as a major league pitcher, became a pitching coach in 2003 with the Milwaukee Brewers, and has been a well regarded pitching coach since. Maddux joined the Rangers as their pitching coach in 2009, departing after the 2015 season to join the Washington Nationals. After two years with the Nats, he was the pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-22. He then returned to Texas as part of Bruce Bochy’s pitching staff.

At age 64, there was some talk that Maddux was considering retirement, and thus may not be back with Texas in 2026. As it turns out, he will not be back in 2026, but will be part of new Angels manager Kurt Suzuki’s staff with an Angels club that has been a bit rudderless for the past decade. It would not surprise me if Maddux will have a degree of control over pitching decisions in Anaheim he may not have had in Texas with new manager Skip Schumaker.
