(MADISON) Cryptocurrency can be a legitimate investment, but law enforcement takes a dim view of crypto ATMs. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says they’re almost exclusively for scamming people. That’s why he says he and other sheriffs and police chiefs support legislative efforts to limit crypto ATM transactions in Wisconsin.
“We are trying to lobby in Madison to get these machines limited, so there is a maximum amount of a deposit that you can make at any given time, just like a normal ATM,” Schmidt told Daily Dodge.
Criminals use crypto ATMs because it’s difficult for law enforcement to track transactions. Schmidt says if a scammer on the phone tries to pressure you into using a crypto ATM, you should simply hang up.
