‘A really special moment for the football club and the town’

Chatham Town are facing an FA Cup first-round challenge for the first time in 97 years this Saturday.
It’s almost a century since Chats were up against Norwich City at this stage of the competition, as the present-day side continues to make history under manager/chairman Kevin Hake.

Chatham suffered a heavy defeat back in 1928, and whatever the outcome this weekend when Hake’s men take on non-league Buxton, it’s been another step forward for the club.
“This weekend is a really special moment for the football club and the town,” said Hake, who has guided the team to two promotions since taking the reins.
“To be in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 97 years is an incredible achievement. It’s something everyone connected with Chatham should feel proud of.
“For me, it’s not just about the players or the staff, it’s about the supporters, the volunteers, and the people who’ve backed this club through good times and bad.
“The buzz around the town over the last few weeks has been unbelievable. You can feel how much this means to everyone, and that’s what makes it so special.”
Chatham are in good form, six unbeaten in the league and also through to the second round of the FA Trophy after last Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Waltham Abbey.
Goals from Kian Moynes and Kian Garlinge booked them a spot in the next round where they’ll face another long trip having been drawn away to Southern League Premier Division side Wimbourne Town.
They also won in midweek, beating Erith Town 3-1 in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Ben Allen, AFC Wimbledon loan man Junior Nkeng and Isaac Hadlow. They will play away to Bromley in the quarter-finals.
New signing Matty Macarthur made his debut for Chats in the win over Erith Town.
This Saturday’s FA Cup game sees Chats playing at the country’s highest altitude football stadium, around 1,000 feet above sea level.
Buxton are currently sitting fifth in National League North, having won 6-0 at their Silverlands Stadium last weekend against Alfreton.
Chats have already beaten a step two side in the competition, however, with a 3-1 victory against National South Tonbridge Angels in the fourth and final FA Cup qualifying round.
“Buxton will be a really tough test,” said Hake, ahead of their trip to Derbyshire.
“They’re a strong side from the league above, and we’ll have to be at our very best.
“But we’ve already shown what we can do in this competition.
“The win at Tonbridge was one of those moments that will live long in the memory, and it showed what this group is capable of when we’re together and focused.
“We’ll go there prepared, confident, and determined to do the club proud.
“Whatever happens, this is a moment for the whole community to enjoy and be part of.
“It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and hopefully just another step in this amazing journey.”
Prior to the trip, Hake will be taking part in a fire walk in aid of the Wisdom Hospice, a charity close to his heart tonight (Thursday) from 7pm at the Bauvill Stadium.
The Chats boss was hoping to raise £500 for the local charity which helps with end of life care and support. You can donate by clicking here.
