Both men spoke at a press conference ahead of their November 1 fight. Below is some of what they had to say.
Lenier Peró vs. Jordan Thompson press conference quotes
Lenier Peró
“I think you know as well when you come into these fights how ready you need to be and I feel like I’m very much in the best physical shape,” said Peró through an interpreter. “Mentally and physically [ready] for this fight. I think you know as well from the fights you’ve seen me in that I’m a great warrior. Very thankful for this opportunity. I also want to welcome my opponent Jordan Thompson, but also say to him: This is not cruiserweight and you’ll see that on Saturday night.”
“When I’m talking about the different fights, the reason why I believe that I can go on and win this fight is because I feel like I prepared really well and I feel like I’m completely ready for this fight. I feel like I want to go in and show what I’m made of and I believe I can do that. So going into this fight Saturday, I feel like I can go in and I can show what I can do and I feel like I have prepared so well for this fight and I’m completely ready.”
Jordan Thompson
“No games,” said Thompson. “I’m grateful to be here. Grateful to be back as well on such a stage. Just constantly being blessed with opportunities from you [Matchroom Boxing] guys so that’s something I’m grateful for. It’s the sport of boxing. This is my track. Take risks and prosper. Nothing that’s worth having comes easy. It’s all about going out there, taking the risk, and believe in you. I’m confident in myself and going out there and doing what I got to do…”
“It’s calculated [his response to the kind of risk a Peró fight is]. This ain’t a sport where you take silly risks and just roll the dice with hope. There ain’t no hope involved. This is calculated. This is self belief. This is belief in the greater good. Believe me, we’re going to come up with something. We’re going to go out there, we’re going to have some fun while doing it as well. I think that’s the main thing for this fight. I just got to go out there, be myself, express myself, and I think above all is the fact that I’m going in there and fully believing in myself. I can’t wait. It’s going to be good fun.”
Fight prediction
This should prove to be a significant challenge for Thompson. The Brit has not fought professionally in over two years and is returning against a very skilled opponent. Peró represented Cuba at the 2016 Olympics and was a gold medalist at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games. Thompson, who has nowhere near the experience, should be in over his head against the Cuban. Expect Peró to win this via stoppage within five rounds.
