Sports Seriously

The Green Bay Packers are facing the Carolina Panthers on Sunday in Week 9, and some NFL fans will be surprised to see they aren’t wearing their usual green and yellow uniforms.

Instead, the Packers are debuting throwback uniforms for the contest. The look is paying homage to the 1923 version of the team uniforms but has added a few new elements.

Here’s what to know about the Packers’ throwback uniforms for their Week 9 game against the Panthers.

The uniforms the Packers are wearing for Sunday’s game do not have a special name. They are referred to as the team’s “1923 Classic” on the team’s official website.

The uniforms feature hand-painted “leather” helmets. Savvy NFL fans will notice these throwbacks similarly mimic the 1929 throwback uniforms Green Bay wore in 2010-11 and 2013-14, which were also paired with brown helmets to mimic a leather design.

The Packers’ official website outlined that this year’s version of the 1923 uniform will be made up of “navy uniforms, before wearing green, the Packers wore navy uniforms.”

The jerseys have gold block numbers and three gold stripes that mimic the pattern on their 1922-24 long-sleeve sweaters.

The jersey will be complemented by a “custom hand-painted helmet giving the appearance of the leather helmets that the Packers wore during their early days.”

The players will wear tan pants to complete the uniform.

The jerseys will feature numbers on the front to comply with modern league standards, although the originals in 1923 did not.
