Wednesday’s Championship predictions

Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough finished 12th and tenth in the 2024-25 Championship standings but they have gone in different directions over the last few months and that pattern looks set to continue after Wednesday’s meeting between the two at Hillsborough, where Boro can take all three points.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson is among the more patient owners in English football but he seems to have made the right decision by replacing Michael Carrick with Rob Edwards in the dugout.

Carrick favoured a possession-based style but there was a lack of consistency and last season’s tally of 18 league defeats was too many for a club who had started the campaign with hopes of a top-two finish.

Fresh ideas were sought and Edwards’ more pragmatic approach has worked a treat as his team have collected 21 points from ten matches.

Boro had a blip before the October break, going three games without a win, but they were back to their best on Friday with a superb 2-1 victory at home to Ipswich.

Edwards is keen to manage expectations, but his team looked the real deal against the Tractor Boys and they should be far too strong for crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, who look destined for the drop.

Wednesday were far from disgraced in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Charlton but they have taken one point from five games and are unlikely to add to that tally against such strong opponents.

Wrexham are making a decent fist of Championship football but they are still searching for a first home league win and the wait could be extended by Oxford, who can hold their own in north Wales.

The Dragons have been competitive in every gam  but they have mustered only two league victories. Oxford make the trip in high spirits after Saturday’s superb 1-0 win at home to Derby and are worth backing with a half-goal start on the Asian handicap, which pays out if they win or draw.
