NFL trade deadline: Tracking Bears news and rumors

The NFL trade deadline is just hours away, and all eyes are on the Chicago Bears and whether they’re buyers and/or sellers ahead of the Nov. 4 cutoff.

With the Bears sitting at 5-3 with the trade deadline on deck, it’s unclear whether they’ll be buyers or sellers. There are definitely needs at edge rusher, with Dayo Odeyingbo’s ankle injury, and cornerback, amid a myriad of injuries to Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. But there are also a couple of players on the roster who don’t seem to have a role and could be dealt at the deadline.

Below, we’ll track the latest news and rumors around the Bears at the trade deadline:

The Bears acquired defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a sixth-round pick, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move comes after Dayo Odeyingbo suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in a Week 9 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters Monday that the team is willing to make additions at defensive line and cornerback, which are the positions that have been ravaged by injuries. Johnson discussed the defensive ned depth, with Dayo Odeyingbo suffering a season-ending injury.

“It’s wild. It feels like we take some strides and it feels like we take some steps back,” Johnson said. Felt like we had a solution there with Shemar Turner, then we lose him. We get Austin Booker back and then we lose Dayo (Odeyingbo).”

But Johnson also feels “good about the guys we have on the roster currently.”

According to FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer, the Bears are among several teams who are being “aggressive” ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. They’re looking for defensive help, specifically when it comes to the pass rush. It doesn’t come as a surprise given Chicago’s early struggles to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Dayo Odeyingbo’s ankle injury certainly should make things interesting, and it might force GM Ryan Poles to make a move.

The Bears could certainly use pass rush help after Dayo Odeyingbo suffered an ankle injury in Sunday’s win over the Bengals. Odeyingbo was spotted after the game in the locker room sporting a “significant brace and on crutches.” According to Brad Biggs, Chicago discussed a potential move for Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. But that became moot when the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Phillips (in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick) on Monday morning.

Bears’ biggest position needs at trade deadline

Chicago’s biggest needs come on defense, where there have been some notable injuries. The Bears rank near the middle of the league in sacks (17), where defensive end Montez Sweat is starting to hit his stride with three sacks in the last three games. But with Dayo Odeyingbo suffering an ankle injury, Chicago could use reinforcements (even after Austin Booker’s return). Then there’s the secondary, where the Bears’ top cornerbacks in Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon are on injured reserve. Could they make a move ahead of the deadline, especially after allowing Joe Flacco to carve them up for 470 yards and four touchdowns?
