Folarin Balogun’s run of scoring form has hit the UEFA Champions League.
Balogun, the U.S. men’s national team striker, scored the first Champions League goal of his career in Monaco’s League Phase match against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday. Receiving the ball on the left side of the box after a give-and-go with Maghnes Akliouche, Balogun powered a left-footed shot high and inside the near post to give his Ligue 1 side the lead in the 43rd minute.
The goal was Balogun’s fourth in his last eight matches across all competitions for club and country and fifth goal of the season in all competitions for Monaco, which entered Tuesday having yet to win a match in the Champions League through its first three games this season (two draws, one defeat).
For Balogun, the goal further reinforced his status as the U.S.’s leading striker, a role he should be expected to reprise next week when the U.S. gathers ahead of friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay. Mauricio Pochettino’s roster is due to be revealed later this week.

Balogun’s chief competition currently comes from PSV’s Ricardo Pepi, who has two goals in his last three games in all competitions, including a Champions League goal against Napoli on the previous matchday, and Haji Wright, whose eight goals have put him one off the lead in the EFL Championship scoring charts.
