Snow and frosty temps are in the forecast this week in Edmonton | News

It’s been a mild past few weeks in Edmonton, but it appears we’re finally in for a dose of winter weather, and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says now is the time to get those winter tires on.

Today’s sunny high of 6°C is the warmest it’s going to get until the weekend, with the rest of this workweek looking to be cold, wet, and slick when the thermometer dips below freezing.

Tomorrow, ECCC forecasts Edmonton will see rain with a high of 5°C, which will transition to a mix of rain in snow in the evening. Thursday is expected to see periods of snow through the day, while we can expect to see flurries throughout the day and night on Friday.

Expect some icy road conditions, and give yourself a bit of extra time to get where you’re going this week.

“Snow is on the way. Today or tomorrow would be a good time to get your winter tires on and finish yardwork, if you haven’t already,” a message from ECCC says. “Stay tuned to your local forecasts (and possible alerts) to be prepared for changes in the weather.”

But while the next few days could bring some challenges, relief is on the horizon. By Saturday, temperatures are forecast to reach a sunny 3°C, and by Monday, the daytime high should rebound to around 13°C.

We spoke with ECCC warning preparedness meteorologist Danielle Desjardins last week for a look at Alberta’s November forecast, who said the month is expected to bring a mix of warmer stretches, cold snaps, and the occasional snowfall, so much like what we’re seeing in Edmonton this week.

So while we may be getting a taste of winter, it’s only temporary, which is great news for anyone who isn’t ready for fall to be over!
