Maya Hawke Reveals Uma Thurman’s Advice On Working With Quentin Tarantino: “Keep Your Shoes On”

After leading three Quentin Tarantino movies of her own, Uma Thurman proved to be a valuable resource for her daughter Maya Hawke.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star recently revealed the advice her mother gave her before working on the 2019 movie, following Thurman’s roles in Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill: Vol 1 (2003) and Vol. 2 (2004).

“‘Keep your shoes on,’” recalled Hawke with a laugh on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast.

Tarantino has been known for his directorial fascination with feet, having depicted Thurman’s tootsies on-screen multiple times, as well as the majority of his leading ladies.

Although many fans have chalked up the theme to a foot fetish on Tarantino’s part, the auteur reasoned it’s “just good direction,” telling British GQ in 2021: “I don’t take it seriously.”

“There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies,” added Tarantino. “Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.”

While Hawke, who played Manson family member Linda Kasabian/’Flowerchild’, did not end up barefoot in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, her co-star Margaret Qualley famously showed off her lower extremities in the film.
