Inverness prepares to pay tribute on Remembrance Sunday to those who have died for their country

Wreaths will be placed at the Cavell Gardens war memorial in Inverness on Remembrance Sunday.

Communities across the Inverness area will pay poignant tribute to those who have died in conflict at Remembrance events this weekend.

Hundreds are expected to turn out for the city’s main annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service at the Cavell Gardens war memorial.

Elsewhere, people will also gather at war memorials in towns and villages in sombre observance of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Sunday’s parade in Inverness, involving members of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS), veterans, cadet organisations, young people, politicians, civic leaders and others, will form in Huntly Street at 2.20pm.

This year, it will also include motorcyclists from the Highland Riders’ Branch of the RBLS.

The parade will take a route across the River Ness to the war memorial where the service of Remembrance will begin at 3pm.

It will include a two-minute silence, the laying of wreaths and readings by pupils of Charleston Academy.

Earlier in the day, there will be a special service at Inverness Cathedral starting at 10.30am.

On Saturday, members of the Inverness RBLS and others will lay wreaths at monuments and graves around the city.

They include the Cameron Highlanders Monument in Station Square, the Queen’s Own Highlanders Memorial in Bank Street, the graves of Victoria Cross holders Vice Admiral Sir Anthony Miers and C/Sgt J Munro and Commonwealth War Graves.

The Inverness Military Wives Choir will also perform two concerts at Inverness Cathedral on Saturday.

In Nairn, the Remembrance Sunday parade will form at the Legion Hall at 8.50am with the service at Old Parish Church starting at 9.30am. The Act of Remembrance will take place at Nairn war memorial at 10.45am.

Acts of Remembrance will also take place on Sunday at Cawdor war memorial (11am), Auldearn war memorial (noon), Ardclach war memorial (2pm) and Ardersier war memorial (2pm).

Communities in Beauly, Kirkhill and Kiltarlity will also hold Remembrance services.

On Tuesday November 11, a two-minute silence will be observed outside Inverness Town House at 11am.

It will take place during a during a brief ceremony starting at 10.45am to mark Armistice Day when the nation is invited to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifices made by the Armed Forces.

Held each year at 11am on November 11, the silence coincides with the time in 1918 at which World War I came to an end and is observed at war memorials and in public places throughout the UK and Commonwealth.
