Flurries could be blowing into Waterloo Region soon

Canada’s weather agency is asking people to tie down loose objects as strong winds blow across Waterloo Region.

A special weather statement issued for Wednesday notes wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected into the evening. It could be a reminder to change over winter tires and break into the closet for mittens as the first hit of winter flurries is possible.

The windy weather looks to be blowing in those brisk temperatures, with 570’s Weather Specialist Denise Andreacchi saying the coming weekend could be the region’s first real hit of winter.

“Really, through this weekend and the beginning of next week, we definitely have a cooler weather pattern around the corner,” she stated. “We are going to watch for some flurries through the weekend. This is going to be a really southern Ontario in general has the chance, and it’s a slight risk for Kitchener and Waterloo Region.”

Going into the specifics, Andreacchi said those winter flurries could build up through the weekend, leading to Monday being the coldest and potentially snowiest to date.

“Late Friday night, a bit of mixed precipitation, Saturday night as well,” Andreacchi said. “Then we could see some mixing Sunday morning, followed by just straight flurries on Monday.”

Looking at the temperatures, Andreacchi said it will be fairly brisk alongside those risks of winter flurries, with lows into the negatives, averaging at around -2 C. For Monday, similarly to the possibly snowy conditions, she said it will be the coldest, with a high of just -1 C.

For those wanting to look even further ahead, with the holidays now beginning to be on the minds of many throughout the region, the hit of winter may not be a direct factor for what Christmas Day could look like.

CityNews Meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said we could be in store for more of a green Christmas as opposed to a snowy, white one. She pointed to the lasting impacts of climate change having an impact on the local weather patterns this holiday season.

All-in-all, it may be time to start preparing for winter across Waterloo Region, with those winter days looking to become more and more frequent as 2025 continues.

The first official day of Winter is still a month and a half away, set for Dec. 21.
