US politics live: Trump’s ‘crazy’ nemesis makes huge move

Welcome to our coverage of US politics.

A politician who has been an outspoken thorn in the side of Donald Trump has retired after 39 year in Congress.

Nancy Pelosi, a sprightly 85, has said she will step down from representing her California electorate when her term ends in 2027 after the midterm elections.

For many years Ms Pelosi was the house speaker. In one of her most memorable moments, during Mr Trump’s first term, she was sitting behind him in the speaker’s chair as he gave a State of the Union address. The second he stopped speaking, she theatrically ripped up a hard copy of his speech for all to see.

The Republicans continue to reel from their widespread election losses this week which include the election of a Democratic Socialist as mayor of New York City.

Many pundits have said Americans are still feeling the pain of coast of living expenses and are wary of Mr Trump’s tariffs which they fear are stoking inflation.

But, said Mr Trump on Thursday US time, it’s a non-issue which just needs to stop being talked about.

“My cost are lower than the Democrats on everything, especially oil and gas!” he thundered on social media.

“So the Democrats “affordability” issue is DEAD! STOP LYING!!!”
