Report: Bench coach Don Mattingly leaving Blue Jays

After coming within two outs of his first World Series title, Toronto Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly is moving on.

The baseball lifer is leaving the Blue Jays but not planning to retire, sources confirmed to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi and Ben Nicholson-Smith. The decision to leave was made by Mattingly.

The New York Post reported the news first on Thursday.

Mattingly, 64, has been with the Blue Jays for three years, culminating in his first Fall Classic appearance in more than 36 seasons as a player, coach and manager.

The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies are the only current teams with managerial openings.

Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro and general manager Ross Atkins are expected to meet with media later Thursday.
