Sturm Graz 0-0 Nottingham Forest: Morgan Gibbs-White misses penalty in Europa League

Morgan Gibbs-White missed a first-half penalty as an injury-hit Nottingham Forest failed to find a way through Sturm Graz in the Europa League.

Manager Sean Dyche was forced into making seven changes to the side that drew with Manchester United on Saturday but Forest had numerous opportunities to take the lead.

Captain Gibbs-White was given a golden chance to breach the Austrians’ defence 10 minutes before half-time after Emanuel Aiwu handled in the box.

The England international’s weak penalty was saved by Oliver Christensen, low to his left and Ryan Yates was unable to follow up.

Dyche’s side should have taken the lead earlier in the tie. James McAtee was inches away from putting Forest in the lead but he could not find the bottom corner after a well-worked free-kick.

Forest continued to pile on the pressure from set-pieces. Nikola Milenkovic nodded a corner back into the box where Ryan Yates saw his header cleared off the line by Arjan Malic.

With minutes to spare, Nicolas Dominguez’s powerful drive struck the crossbar via a wicked deflection.

Before Forest had their chance from the spot, the home side thought they had taken the lead when Maurice Malone tapped in from John Victor’s poor save but the offside flag spared the goalkeeper’s blushes.

The draw leaves Forest 18th on five points, while Sturm Graz sit a point adrift in 23rd.
