Matildas star and an in-form 17yo extend premiers’ wild streak to 29 in rout of the champs!

Holly McNamara and Shelby McMahon ignited Melbourne City with two goals apiece as the reigning premiers outclassed defending Ninja A-League champions Central Coast Mariners 4-0 on Saturday.
McNamara clinched the Golden Boot last season and the CommBank Matildas forward opened her 2025-26 account to inspire City’s comprehensive win over the Mariners in Round 2.

Labelled “one of the most exciting talents in the country”, the City superstar broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute and bagged her second goal of the game nine minutes into the second half after 17-year-old team-mate Shelby McMahon doubled the home team’s lead in first-half stoppage time.

McMahon completed the scoring inside the final 20 minutes to improve her tally to three goals in two games.
Central Coast were the only team to beat City last season after stunning the premiers in the Semi-Finals en route to a maiden Championship but they were no match for the AFC Women’s Champions League runners-up, who extended their unbeaten streak in the regular season to 29 matches.
It is an incredible run that dates back to March 2024 following last week’s draw away to Sydney FC, while Central Coast have three points from the opening two rounds.
