Chelsea want to sign Manchester United player in January

Chelsea have some of the most highly-rated young talents around Europe. In fact, many believe that too they have too many such players right now and need to focus on adding some experienced, proven winners to the mix. The Blues don’t seem to be veering away from their strategy though, despite the difficulties they have faced in recent seasons.

Now, a Manchester United wonderkid is in their sights. One who has not started a single Premier League game so far this season despite having ten England caps to his name at 20 years of age.

The issue for Chelsea is that it is not going to be an easy transfer race to win. In fact, they already seem to be trailing Napoli and have plenty of other competition as well.

As reported by CaughtOffside, Napoli wanted Kobbie Mainoo in the summer and it’s still felt that they’re leading the race to sign him from Manchester United. However, Chelsea want him as well alongside Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Leeds United, Everton, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Mainoo wanted to leave in the summer as well and while that was blocked, he will try to engineer an exit in the winter after how the first half of the season has turned out for him. He has not started in the league once and has had to be satisfied with the role of an impact substitute.

Mainoo might be a very good fit for Chelsea, as the club need another option in the midfield if they decide to move on from Romeo Lavia. The Belgian is a phenomenal talent but it has become very clear that he is extremely injury-prone.

That is unfortunate because, based on talent, he can be one of the best in the league in his position. But it is hard to see him reaching his potential, as he simply cannot remain fit for any extended length of time.

Interestingly, Lavia has been linked with Manchester United in recent times. Could a swap with Mainoo be on the cards?
